EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS and SCHEME OF STUDIES

1. Younger Students:

The educational policy of TCV School, Suja for younger students are according to TCV Educational Development Council guidelines and resolutions in consultation with TCV Head Office.

2.Older Students from Tibet

The students admitted in this school, ages from 14-17 years will have the option to join the following educational programs as per Youth Educational Policy of TCV School, Suja HP:

1. Opportunity Classes (OC I & II for Foundation Study/Basic Education)

2. Two-year Language Program (Tibetan &English with Chinese as an option)

3. Vocational Training Programs

4. Academic Stream up-to Secondary Education - Class X and beyond

Open School Examinations: Earlier

Earlier times, the students were given intensive coaching in Tibetan, English and Mathematics for four years, thus equivalent to class eighth grade. After completion of this bridge covering course, the students register and appear in the National Open School Board (Indira Gandhi National Open School) for class X. Seven batches have completed and many of them had pursued in the higher studies and are now working in various Tibetan communities. This system is no longer present in the school as the students can go to higher classes as regular students.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION POLICY

Promotion Criteria

I Opportunity Classes (OC) – Senior Screening Procedures:

The education system at TCV School, Suja, will be open ended and flexible to suit the individual needs of the students. A thorough screening process of the students' progress and aspirations will be done at various stages taking into consideration their age, ability, aptitude and plan of return to Tibet after completion of a course. The students will be regularly assessed comprehensively. This assessment requires school Heads and staff to communicate with the students on a one-to-one basis in an environment of trust and understanding. The Youth Educational Policy of TCV School, Suja (HP) will have the following dimension.

1. Initially all the students admitted will be placed in the 2/3-Year Opportunity Classes (OC I & II) where the emphasis will be placed in learning Tibetan, English and Mathematics subjects covering courses at least up-to class Five level besides other educational programs and activities. A Final Qualifying Common Examinations will be conducted in the above-cited subjects at the end of OC – II.

2. After completing Two/Three-year of Basic Education (OC I & II), the students will have the option to choose any of the following provided they fulfill the requirement for each:

A. Academic Stream (Secondary Education - Class X):

B. The 2-Year Language Program at the school + One year non-formal

food craft training at VTC, Selakui, Dehradun

C. Vocational Training at TCV School, Patii Kuhl

D. Other Vocational venues: Non-formal training opportunity in the following trades at VTC Selakui: Motor mechanics. Driving, Carpentry and cabinet making, Wireman and electric work and Solar Technology.

1. After OC I or generally after OC II, only willing and capable students will have the option to join the 2- Year Language Program at the school

2. In case of one-time failure at any level of classes from VI to IX, he/she has the option to join One year language program at the school provided that he/she is to ensure in all seriousness and willingness about the choice and return to Tibet after the completion of the one year program.

3. After completion of the 2-Year Language Program, there will be one year food craft training opportunity at VTC, Selakui for those returning toTibet.

4. A standard VIII pass equivalent certificate of their achievement will be issued at the time of leaving school. The 2-Year Language Education Curriculum basically consists of learning Tibetan and English with Chinese language as an optional. The following will be taught and emphasized as additional subjects; Information Technology (IT), Value Education, Tibetan History & Political Education, Environment Studies, Health & Hygiene Education, Human Rights and Democracy and Peace Education along with the normal co-curricular activities in the school.

The students in the 2- year language program are provided the opportunity to join in one year non-formal food craft training at TCV VTC, Dehradun, so that they can be self reliant for themselves in their future endeavor.

Repeat Chance:

1. A student who fails OC II Final assessment, will be given chance to repeat OC II if he/she is 16 years and below at the time of assessment and had never gone to school in Tibet before. Or he/she may opt for the language program or join any vocational line provided he/she fulfills the requirement.

2. OC Junior: We keep them in a separate class and emphasize and teach them Tibetan, English and Mathematics as per their pace of understanding, and considering the ability, aptitude and age. We promote the students to higher classes after thorough screening, assessment of their performances and achievements on the regular basis by the teachers through discussion and differentiate the individuals on one to one cases.

3. Montessori-Stage Classes: - No testing for the Montessori children.
